Fubara Pulls Out of APC Governorship Primaries, Says Rivers’ Peace Matters More Than Ambition

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has withdrawn from the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress, saying his decision was driven by the need to protect peace, stability, and unity in Rivers State ahead of the party’s exercise scheduled for Thursday.

In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday night, Fubara said the decision came after wide consultations with family, friends, and close associates. He explained that he would no longer take part in the APC primaries and would instead support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.

According to him, leadership sometimes demands difficult choices, especially when personal ambition must be set aside for the greater good. He said his withdrawal reflects a conscious decision to prioritise the wellbeing and stability of the state over political contest.

The governor also thanked his supporters for standing by him throughout the process, acknowledging their loyalty, prayers, and sacrifices. He noted that while some may be disappointed by his decision, it was taken in the best interest of Rivers State.

Fubara revealed that he had faced “immense pressure and difficult choices” in recent times, adding that his silence on certain issues was deliberate and aimed at avoiding actions that could further strain the state’s stability. He also appreciated the leadership of the APC and President Bola Tinubu for their support and encouragement.

He stressed that his withdrawal should not be seen as weakness or surrender, but as a sacrifice for peace and unity. Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving Rivers people faithfully until the end of his tenure.
