“I Can Never Leave My Father” — Desmond Elliot Speaks on Loyalty to Gbajabiamila Amid Political Tension

Desmond Elliot has dismissed rumours suggesting a crack in his relationship with the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila. Speaking during an interview with BBC Pidgin on Tuesday, the Lagos lawmaker reaffirmed his loyalty to both Gbajabiamila and President Bola Tinubu despite reports of political disagreements.

The lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly stressed that democracy should not be treated like a military regime where subordinates openly challenge authority. According to him, the political stature of Tinubu and Gbajabiamila is far beyond anything he would attempt to undermine.

Elliot described Gbajabiamila as not only his political leader but also a father figure whom he deeply respects. He explained that occasional misunderstandings are normal in every relationship and should not be exaggerated by the public or political observers.

“I don’t only have a relationship with Gbajabiamila. He is my boss. I’m loyal to him, and he loves me like a son. In life, even between father and son, there can be small issues once in a while, and people settle it,” he stated during the interview.

The politician also noted that he was not expecting anyone to intervene in any perceived disagreement between them. According to him, a child can apologise to a father, but it is ultimately left to the father to decide when to move on. He further insisted that he could never abandon Gbajabiamila regardless of the political situation.

Reacting to questions surrounding the reported crisis involving the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and the presidency, Elliot avoided making detailed comments. He maintained that his priority remains strengthening grassroots support for the APC and ensuring President Tinubu secures a second term in 2027. Elliot added that the recent political developments have drawn him closer to God, stressing that leadership and public service require divine guidance.
