The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional detectives from the Force Headquarters to support ongoing efforts to rescue students and teachers kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims, drawn from both public and private schools, were abducted on Friday, prompting a coordinated security response involving multiple agencies working to secure their safe release.
Security sources said the reinforcement was part of intensified operations aimed at ensuring the victims return home unharmed. According to the sources, the government and security agencies are fully committed to the rescue mission and are exploring every possible option to bring the students and their teachers back safely. Residents and parents were also urged not to panic, with assurances that authorities remain firmly in control of the situation.
Meanwhile, tension briefly spread across Ogbomoso and nearby Ajaawa communities on Monday following rumours of an alleged bandit attack around Are-Ago High School. The Oyo State Police Command, however, dismissed the reports as false, explaining that the panic began after some students claimed they noticed suspicious individuals behind the school fence. Police patrol teams were immediately deployed to investigate the situation and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
After preliminary investigations, the police discovered that the individuals involved included an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps attached to the Kwara State Command and two civilians who had visited the area for a birthday celebration. Authorities said an argument between some teachers and the visitors fueled suspicion, leading students to spread unverified information across neighbouring schools and communities. The police stressed that there was no bandit attack or security breach in the area and warned against the spread of fake news capable of causing fear and disrupting public peace. The command also assured residents that normal activities had fully resumed while security patrols remain active across the affected communities.
