Fresh talks about a possible political comeback by former President Goodluck Jonathan gathered momentum on Tuesday after a former presidential aide, Umar Sani, claimed that Jonathan has already obtained a presidential nomination form ahead of the 2027 elections. Sani made the statement during an interview on Trust TV, saying the former president’s recent political consultations were a strong sign that he may be preparing to return to the race.
According to Sani, who once served as media aide to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Jonathan’s silence should not be mistaken for lack of interest. He explained that the former president has been careful with his next steps, especially because of the internal challenges currently facing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Still, he insisted that Jonathan’s actions speak louder than words.
Sani also rejected claims that some politicians were only trying to use Jonathan’s popularity to revive their own political relevance. He maintained that the former president had already gone beyond mere speculation by reportedly purchasing the nomination form and preparing to submit it publicly. He added that many within the PDP believe Jonathan remains the right person to lead the country at this moment.
Speaking further, Sani expressed confidence that any court case challenging Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again would not succeed. He argued that the matter had already been settled legally and said the pending case before Justice Peter Lifu would likely be thrown out when it comes up on May 26. He also noted that many Nigerians still look back fondly on Jonathan’s time in office, adding that the growing nostalgia around his administration is one of the reasons support for his possible return continues to grow.
