Lagos Records Over 450 Domestic Violence Complaints Monthly — Agency

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has disclosed that it now receives more than 450 domestic violence-related complaints every month through its hotlines, social media platforms, and online reporting channels. The agency said the increase reflects growing public confidence in the support system available to victims.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, made this known during a stakeholders’ engagement and technical training organised by the Lagos State Command and Control Centre in Ikeja on Tuesday. She revealed that the agency records between 400 and 450 fresh cases every month.

According to her, domestic and sexual violence remain among the most underreported crimes despite the increasing number of complaints being received. She noted that while the agency is seeing more reports, many victims still suffer in silence and fail to seek help due to fear, stigma, and other social pressures.

Vivour-Adeniyi explained that more victims are now reaching out for assistance through emergency lines, the agency’s offices, and various social media platforms. She added that the agency operates a 24-hour gender-based violence virtual referral response service in partnership with emergency responders, allowing victims to access emergency assistance and psychosocial support through the 203 emergency line at any time.

She also stressed that domestic violence goes beyond physical abuse, noting that emotional and verbal abuse are equally recognised under Lagos State law. According to her, the absence of physical injuries does not reduce the emotional and psychological harm suffered by victims. She urged residents experiencing any form of abuse to speak up and seek help rather than remain silent.

The agency boss further warned parents against concealing cases of sexual abuse involving children, stating that such actions are punishable under the law. She disclosed that parents found guilty of covering up sexual offences could face up to three years imprisonment and encouraged families to promptly report abuse cases so victims can receive justice, protection, and proper care.
