Manchester United are reportedly leaning towards handing interim manager Michael Carrick the job on a permanent basis after what has been a strong run in charge of the team.
Key figures at the club, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, have already identified Carrick as their preferred option for the role.
The recommendation is expected to be taken to minority owner Jim Ratcliffe this week, and if he gives the green light, formal talks could begin shortly afterwards before any official announcement is made.
Carrick stepped in as interim manager on January 13 after the club parted ways with Ruben Amorim following a difficult run of results.
Since then, the turnaround has been noticeable. Under his leadership, United have won 10 of their 15 games and lost just twice, climbing from seventh to third in the Premier League and securing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Perhaps most impressive is the fact that no team has picked up more Premier League points than United during his spell in charge. The team also recorded big wins over rivals such as Manchester City and Arsenal FC.
Carrick has been calm about the situation, repeatedly stressing the need for patience and long-term planning.
“We have to look at the bigger picture and keep building every day,” he said recently.
United had also looked at other big names for the job, including Thomas Tuchel and Luis Enrique, but both are understood to be committed to their current roles.
