Marcelino to Leave Villarreal After Champions League Qualification Amid Contract Stalemate

Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral will depart the club at the end of the season despite successfully guiding the Yellow Submarines into next season’s UEFA Champions League, the club confirmed on Monday.

The 60-year-old Spanish tactician is currently in his second spell at the club, having previously managed Villarreal from 2013 to 2016 before returning in 2023.

According to reports, Marcelino was unable to reach an agreement with the club over a contract extension, despite securing another strong season in charge.

He helped steer the team away from relegation danger in the 2023/24 campaign, finishing eighth, before leading them to fifth place the following season and securing Champions League qualification.

Villarreal’s emphatic 5–1 victory over Levante on Saturday confirmed a top-four finish, with the club currently sitting third  and ensured back-to-back Champions League appearances for the first time in their history.

Marcelino’s exit comes just as the club continues to enjoy strong domestic form following their 2021 Europa League triumph.

Meanwhile, Spanish media reports suggest that Iñigo Pérez, currently in charge of Rayo Vallecano, is among the frontrunners to replace him.
