Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State staged a peaceful protest in Ibadan on Monday, calling for urgent action over the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The protest follows the May 15 attack on Esiele community, where armed kidnappers stormed schools and abducted more than 40 students and teachers, leaving the education sector and local residents in deep distress.
In the days after the incident, reports emerged that the abductors had circulated disturbing videos showing the victims being subjected to harsh treatment in a forest location, further heightening public concern.
With nearly three weeks passing without the safe return of the victims, teachers across both primary and secondary schools in the state mobilised to press home their demand for swift and decisive intervention.
The protesters converged at Iwo Road in Ibadan, marching peacefully through the area while chanting solidarity songs and calling for the immediate rescue of their colleagues and students, repeatedly voicing the slogan, “bring back our children, no more bandits.”
They urged security agencies and government authorities to intensify rescue operations and take stronger measures to secure schools across the state, warning that continued attacks on educational institutions pose a serious threat to learning and safety.
