Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the standout figures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his remarkable performance against Spain earned him global acclaim and a dramatic surge in popularity.
The veteran shot-stopper saw his Instagram following soar from just over 50,000 before Cape Verde's opening World Cup match to more than 7.6 million within 24 hours of the encounter, highlighting the worldwide attention generated by his display.
Vozinha was instrumental in helping World Cup debutants Cape Verde secure a historic 0-0 draw against Spain in Atlanta on Monday, earning the island nation its first-ever point at football's biggest tournament.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves throughout the match, frustrating Spain's attacking stars, including teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. His outstanding contribution earned him the Player of the Match award and made him one of the tournament's most talked-about performers.
The achievement adds another memorable chapter to an unconventional football journey. Vozinha's only major club trophy came during the 2018/19 season when he helped AEL Limassol lift the Cypriot Cup, making his World Cup breakthrough all the more remarkable.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Vozinha reflected on the significance of the moment, revealing that he had previously considered retiring from football. He dedicated his award to his teammates, saying their collective effort made the historic result possible and helped him fulfil a lifelong dream at the age of 40.
