Daddy Freeze Says Alex Ekubo’s Service of Songs Lost Its Funeral Atmosphere

Veteran Nigerian media personality Daddy Freeze has revealed why he left the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo before the event ended. The broadcaster shared his reasons during an Instagram Live session over the weekend.

The service of songs took place in Lagos last Wednesday and attracted several notable personalities from different sectors, including gospel artistes, pastors, actors, entertainers and other public figures who gathered to pay their respects to the late actor.

Speaking about the event, Daddy Freeze said he became uncomfortable with the atmosphere after gospel singer Mercy Chinwo took the stage to minister. According to him, the nature of the performance did not align with what he believes a funeral gathering should be.

He claimed that the event gradually began to resemble a concert rather than a solemn occasion of remembrance. As a result, he decided to excuse himself and leave while the programme was still in progress.

Questioning the choice of songs performed, Daddy Freeze wondered whether Mercy Chinwo did not have softer songs that would have been more appropriate for the occasion. He maintained that funeral services should feature calm and reflective music that matches the mood of mourning and remembrance.

“At that point I got up and left,” he said during the live broadcast. “Do you understand what a funeral is? The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have just played hymns for like two hours, then I would have sat down there and enjoyed it.”
