Dele Momodu Foresees Tinubu–Atiku Showdown, Questions Opposition Strength

The publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, has said the 2027 presidential election is likely to be a straight contest between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, effectively downplaying the chances of Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the race.

In a statement titled “Time for National Reconciliation, Re-Orientation & Reconstruction” shared on his X handle on Monday, Momodu said Nigeria’s political landscape is shaping up into a two-horse race dominated by the incumbent president and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) standard-bearer.

He described the anticipated contest as a “battle of the Titans,” adding that the 2027 presidential election would be a major political showdown between Tinubu and Atiku, whom he identified as the incumbent’s biggest challenger.

Momodu acknowledged that a third-force movement similar to what emerged in 2023 could still surface ahead of the election. However, he argued that such a platform would likely lack the strength and structure to displace the two dominant political figures.

According to him, while alternative movements may emerge, they may not possess sufficient political “firepower and tenacity” to upstage or dislodge the two major contenders. His comments have been interpreted as sidelining other opposition figures, including Peter Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election.

Beyond electoral projections, Momodu urged the ADC to position itself as a unifying platform that bridges Nigeria’s old political order with emerging leadership. He also warned of rising ethnic and religious tensions ahead of 2027, calling for issue-based politics and a return to national unity, reconciliation, and value-driven leadership inspired by Nigeria’s founding leaders.
