Gunmen have attacked the staff quarters of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, killing two soldiers and a police officer who were on security duty.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NIPSS Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, confirmed that a security breach occurred near the institute but said the situation was swiftly brought under control.
He assured that participants, staff, residents, and facilities within the institute remain safe, adding that normal academic and administrative activities have continued without disruption.
Security sources revealed that the attackers were suspected to have targeted the residences of the Acting Director of Studies, Barrister Nima Salman-Mann, and a Directing Staff member, Professor Haruna Dabin, who had earlier reportedly received handwritten threat notes demanding $100,000 and ₦15 million respectively. The threats were said to have been reported to management.
According to another source, the slain personnel were killed during a gun battle with the attackers. It was also noted that while local vigilantes provide daytime security, soldiers and police officers are deployed at night to secure the staff quarters.
NIPSS confirmed that security agencies have launched investigations into the incident and urged the public and media to rely only on official updates. The institute also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of its community, commending the response of security operatives, while confirming that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary.
