Nigerian rapper Tobechukwu Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has come under criticism on social media following his comments on Igbo investments and land ownership in Lagos State. The debate has since sparked wider conversations online about ethnicity, commerce and regional relations in Nigeria.
The controversy began after Illbliss defended the economic presence of the Igbo community in Lagos, stressing that they have played a significant role in the state’s commercial growth and real estate development over the years.
In a post shared on X, he wrote: “The Igbos have contributed immensely to the Lagos economy! Commerce wise! If you have a problem with it, hug a frigging transformer!!! We have made massive investments in real estate too!! Other tribes have contributed too. Why is it always a problem when it’s the Igbos? Why?”
Following the post, some social media users resurfaced an old podcast interview in which Illbliss discussed what he described as internal discrimination within parts of the South-East region.
In the clip, the rapper claimed that prejudice sometimes exists among Igbo people themselves, with individuals allegedly discouraged from doing business with or marrying people from certain states, local government areas, or communities within the region.
Critics have since accused him of inconsistency, arguing that his earlier comments on internal divisions contrast with his recent defence of Igbo economic activities in Lagos, thereby intensifying the ongoing online debate.
