Lagos-based businessman and social commentator Illbliss has restated the strong bond between the Igbo community and Lagos State, while issuing an apology for comments he made during a heated social media exchange that triggered widespread reactions. The controversy began after he highlighted the contributions of Igbo people and other ethnic groups to Lagos’ economic growth, a post that attracted hostile responses suggesting that Igbos should leave the state.
Illbliss said he reacted emotionally to the backlash, noting that his response included a controversial statement about Igbo ownership of land in Lagos and the idea that such properties could eventually be resold to their original owners. He acknowledged that the remark sparked further debate online and intensified discussions around ethnicity, identity, and belonging in the city.
In his clarification, he expressed regret over the tone of his response and apologised to anyone offended, stressing that his intention was not to disrespect Lagos or diminish its historical importance. He reaffirmed that Lagos remains a welcoming and opportunity-rich city for Nigerians of all backgrounds, and called for continued unity, tolerance, and mutual respect among residents. Illbliss added that he remains committed to the progress of Lagos and believes the state’s strength lies in its diversity and shared development.
