IPOB Suspends Nnamdi Kanu’s Office Amid Leadership Shake-Up

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the suspension of the offices of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and the Director of Radio Biafra as part of a major leadership restructuring within the movement.

The decision was reached during a full meeting of the Directorate on Wednesday, where members reviewed intelligence reports allegedly linked to communications originating from Kanu while in detention at Sokoto prison. The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of IPOB’s Directorate of State.

According to the group, a Directorate of State will now oversee and manage its affairs. IPOB emphasized that the movement was founded collectively by Biafrans in the diaspora and not by a single individual, insisting that no one person has the authority to dissolve its highest governing structure.

The organisation stated that the suspension became necessary following concerns that “unguarded communications from Sokoto prison” had allegedly contributed to the arrest and deaths of some of its members. It maintained that the move was aimed at safeguarding the movement and its supporters.

IPOB also expressed concern over alleged plans by certain individuals to establish a militia, warning that such actions could escalate violence in the South-East. The group further claimed that the Department of State Services (DSS) monitors Kanu’s communications and visitors, raising fears about the potential consequences of sensitive information being disclosed.

The group said the suspension was intended to prevent what it described as the “reckless assumption of authority and unguarded utterances” that could expose Biafran youths to arrests, torture, or death. It added that any criminal acts carried out under the suspended offices would no longer be associated with IPOB. The announcement comes amid reports that Kanu had dissolved the 3rd Directorate of State and established a 4th administration, appointing US-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ to head the new structure and oversee operations under his directive.
