Super Eagles midfielder Alexander Iwobi has expressed deep gratitude to Nigeria and Nigerians at home and in the diaspora for their support throughout his international career, as he prepares to earn his 100th cap for the national team in a friendly against Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday.
Iwobi said he is proud to represent Nigeria and has no regrets about choosing to play for the Super Eagles. He also appreciated the coach who first invited him to the national team, describing his journey with the green and white as a fulfilling experience.
The midfielder made his debut for Nigeria in a friendly against DR Congo in Visé, Belgium on October 8, 2015. Nearly 10 years and eight months later, he is set to reach the milestone of 100 international appearances in another European friendly.
Reflecting on his decision, Iwobi recalled his time with the Nigeria U23 team camp, saying he felt at home despite previously representing England at youth level. He noted that his father supported his choice but did not force it on him, encouraging him instead to follow his passion.
Iwobi identified his goal against Zambia in Uyo in October 2017, which secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, as his most memorable moment. He said the experience was special because both his parents were present to witness it, adding that while he wished he had won the AFCON or featured in another World Cup, he has no regrets.
His father, Barr. Chuka Iwobi, also expressed pride in his son’s achievements, thanking Nigeria for the opportunity that has allowed him to reach the 100-cap milestone. Iwobi has featured in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, winning silver in 2023 and bronze in 2019 and 2025, and also played at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
