The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced the commencement of medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples registered for the state’s upcoming mass wedding programme. The exercise is part of the requirements participants must meet before being cleared to take part in the initiative.
Making the assertion on Sunday, the board’s Deputy Commander General, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, disclosed that the screening exercise will begin on Monday across 24 local government areas of the state.
According to Aminudeen, the programme will involve 1,500 male and 1,500 female participants. He explained that the screening is designed to assess the health status of all registered couples and ensure they are medically fit before proceeding with the marriage programme.
The board, working in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, has finalized arrangements for a comprehensive medical evaluation. Participants will be tested for HIV/AIDS, genotype compatibility, hepatitis B, drug use, gonorrhoea and other sexually transmitted infections.
Aminudeen urged all registered applicants to report to Hisbah offices within their respective local government areas for the exercise. He warned that any participant who fails to undergo the mandatory screening would be disqualified and removed from the programme.
He further stated that only candidates who successfully pass the medical tests will qualify for the mass wedding. The initiative, reintroduced by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is aimed at addressing social challenges, including prostitution, while providing marriage support for individuals and families who may be unable to afford the costs associated with traditional wedding ceremonies.
