Abuja, June 19, 2026 – The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), has announced the extension of the deadline for the submission of textbooks and other instructional resources for assessment, reassessment, and ranking under the 2026 Phase 1 exercise.
The extension, approved by the Honourable Ministers of Education, follows widespread requests from stakeholders in the book industry seeking additional time to comply with the requirements of the new textbook assessment and ranking policy.
Speaking on the development, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Salisu Shehu, stated that the extension is intended to provide publishers, authors, printers, and other stakeholders with sufficient time to complete their submissions in accordance with the Book Quality Guidelines and Submission Procedure issued by the Council.
Under the revised schedule, the deadline for submission, which was initially set for June 19, 2026, has now been extended to July 3, 2026.
NERDC reiterated that the 2026 assessment and ranking exercise will be conducted in three phases. Phase 1 covers Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS 1 and SS 1; Phase 2 covers Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2; while Phase 3 covers Primary 3, Primary 6, JSS 3 and SS 3.
The Council emphasized that all textbooks, including those previously assessed for the affected class levels, must be resubmitted for assessment or reassessment in line with the new policy direction, which introduces ranking into the book approval process. It further explained that all textbooks intended for ranking will first undergo assessment based on improved standards, processes, and newly approved benchmarks.
NERDC stressed that the extension is final and that no further extensions will be granted. Consequently, textbooks and instructional materials submitted after July 3, 2026, will not be considered for assessment, reassessment, or ranking under Phase 1 of the exercise.
The Council urged all stakeholders in the book industry to take full advantage of the extended submission window and ensure that all materials are submitted in strict compliance with the approved guidelines and procedures.
NERDC also noted that all existing guidelines, requirements, payment procedures, and submission conditions contained in the earlier notice remain valid. Assessment and ranking of all submitted textbooks and instructional resources are expected to be concluded by July 31, 2026.
For further enquiries and correspondence, stakeholders are advised to contact the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Sheda, P.M.B. 91, Garki, FCT-Abuja.
