Oba Aweda Confirmed Dead in Captivity After Abduction in Kwara State

The traditional ruler of Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, has been confirmed dead after being abducted by kidnappers who demanded ₦21 million, two motorcycles, and a jerrycan of petrol for his release.

His death was announced in an emotional voice message obtained from a member of a community committee involved in efforts to secure his freedom. According to the message, all attempts by family members, residents, community leaders, and religious figures to negotiate his release were unsuccessful.

The speaker, while expressing grief, quoted religious sentiments and said all human beings belong to God and shall ultimately return to Him. He added that the late monarch had “answered the call of his Creator,” referring to his passing in captivity.

A community committee involved in the case has urged residents to accept the development as God’s will. It also announced plans for Islamic funeral prayers, noting that although the monarch’s body had not yet been recovered, rites could still be conducted.

Sources indicated that the kidnappers made the ransom demand during negotiations, while a recently released Kwara resident also confirmed that the monarch died despite ongoing efforts to secure his freedom.

Residents had initially hoped the monarch would be released following negotiations, but he was eventually confirmed dead while still in captivity, bringing grief and shock to the community.
