Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has sparked widespread criticism after making a controversial statement about the state of hip-hop music, reigniting debate over the genre’s relevance in the country.
Reacting on X to a list of Nigerian artists with the highest monthly listeners on Spotify, Odumodublvck declared, “Hip Hop is dead,” pointing to the absence of Nigerian rappers from the chart.
His comment generated mixed reactions online, with many users accusing him of disrespecting the genre while others argued that hip-hop remains relevant globally despite its declining visibility in Nigeria’s mainstream streaming rankings.
Data from the Spotify list showed that no Nigerian rapper made the top 10, which is dominated entirely by singers. Burna Boy leads with 40.68 million monthly listeners, followed closely by Tems with 40.64 million.
Rema, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid complete the top five, while Omah Lay, Davido, CKay, Fireboy DML, and Asake round out positions six to ten respectively, highlighting the dominance of Afrobeats and pop artists on the platform.
