Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has approved the declaration of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as a public holiday to mark the commencement of the 1448 Hijrah Islamic New Year.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, who said the holiday would enable Muslim faithful across the state to participate fully in activities commemorating the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year.
According to the statement, the Osun State Government is pleased to designate June 17 as a work-free day in recognition of Hijrah 1448AH, a significant occasion that symbolizes the start of a new year in the Islamic faith.
The government extended its greetings and best wishes to Muslims in the state and beyond, expressing hope that the celebration would usher in peace, prosperity, and unity for the people of Osun State.
Aderibigbe, speaking on behalf of the state government, urged residents to embrace the values associated with the Islamic New Year and use the occasion to strengthen social harmony and mutual understanding among different communities.
He also called on citizens to avoid actions that could promote discord or division, encouraging them instead to participate joyfully in festivities that foster unity, togetherness, and peaceful coexistence across the state.
