Perez Secures New Real Madrid Mandate as Mourinho Set for Dramatic Return

Florentino Perez has been re-elected president of Real Madrid by a commanding margin, securing another term at the helm of the Spanish giants and clearing the path for Jose Mourinho’s anticipated return as manager.

The 79-year-old football executive, who has served as Real Madrid president for a combined 23 years across two separate spells, won 65 percent of the votes cast by approximately 100,000 club members, known as socios. His victory came against 37-year-old challenger Enrique Riquelme, according to results announced late Sunday.

Speaking after the election, Perez expressed gratitude for the support he received and pledged to continue building on the club’s success. He told supporters that his administration would remain focused on winning titles and maintaining Real Madrid’s status among football’s elite institutions.

The election outcome is expected to lead directly to the return of Jose Mourinho, who could reportedly be unveiled as Real Madrid’s new manager as early as Monday. Mourinho previously managed the club and has been away from the Santiago Bernabeu for 13 years.

Reports indicate that Real Madrid will pay Mourinho’s current club, Benfica, a release fee of around €15 million ($17.25 million) to secure his services. The move would mark one of the most significant managerial appointments in European football.

Perez also reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the prestige of the Santiago Bernabeu, which he described as the best stadium in the world. He added that the club remains proud to have some of the finest players in football and welcomed Mourinho back as one of the game’s top coaches and a true Madridista.
