The Anambra State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing fight against criminal activities, following the killing of four suspected members of a secessionist armed group and the recovery of weapons, ammunition, vehicles and other items linked to criminal operations in Orumba South Local Government Area.

The operation, which took place on Tuesday night along the Ogboji–Ajalli Road, was carried out by a police-led Joint Security Patrol Team, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Ikenga explained that the security team engaged the suspects in a gun battle during a routine visibility and confidence-building patrol prompted by credible intelligence regarding the movement of heavily armed members of a secessionist group operating within the area.

According to the statement, four members of the gang were killed during the confrontation, while a significant cache of weapons, ammunition and other exhibits was recovered.

“The Police-led Joint Security Patrol Team in the Aguata Sector recorded a major operational success on June 23, 2026, after an armed encounter with a suspected secessionist gang along the Ogboji–Ajalli Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State,” the statement said.

Items recovered from the scene included one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) loaded with 53 rounds of linked live ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, 29 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, 13 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition and four undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Security operatives also recovered police camouflage uniforms and accessories, a white Toyota Sienna bus with Lagos registration number KJA 919 KH, ten Android phones, two feature phones, a laptop computer, a Point-of-Sale machine, two power banks, assorted charms, two live cartridges, ATM cards, a National Identification Card and a driver’s licence belonging to identified individuals.

Ikenga stated that the operation followed sustained intelligence gathering on the activities and movements of the armed group, which was reportedly using the recovered Toyota Sienna vehicle for its operations.

Preliminary investigations revealed that other members of the gang escaped into nearby bushes with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

As a result, the Joint Security Team has intensified search and combing operations across the area to track down the fleeing suspects and recover any additional weapons or operational equipment.

The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with other security agencies to sustain intelligence-driven and proactive operations aimed at eliminating criminal elements and ensuring the safety and security of residents throughout the state.
