Power Minister Joseph Tegbe Identifies Governance as Biggest Obstacle to Sector Reforms

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has identified governance as the most significant challenge confronting the country’s electricity sector, saying it outweighs the technical problems often blamed for poor performance.

Tegbe made the remarks on Tuesday during his resumption at the ministry, where he held an inaugural meeting with the heads of agencies operating under the Ministry of Power.

Addressing stakeholders, the minister acknowledged that Nigeria’s power sector continues to struggle with major issues across the generation, transmission, and distribution segments of the electricity value chain.

He, however, stressed that technical difficulties account for only a small portion of the sector’s challenges, while governance-related shortcomings remain the larger problem affecting efficiency and service delivery.

According to Tegbe, meaningful reforms and sustainable improvements can only be achieved through collaboration among all departments, agencies, and institutions within the power sector.

“This sector faces serious challenges. Technical issues account for only a fraction of those challenges. The larger challenge is governance. No agency, no department, no unit can solve this sector’s problems alone,” he said, while calling for a united approach to addressing the challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.
