Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an immediate expansion of waste evacuation operations across the state in response to growing concerns over the accumulation of refuse in several communities. The directive comes as residents continue to express dissatisfaction with delays in waste collection and disposal services.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, the state government acknowledged the complaints and assured residents that urgent measures were being implemented to restore normal sanitation conditions. The administration reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy, and environmentally sustainable city.
According to the statement, government agencies and waste management service providers have been mobilised to work around the clock to clear existing waste backlogs. Akosile noted that Governor Sanwo-Olu has placed the issue at the highest level of priority, stressing that the administration is fully aware of the inconveniences caused by the situation and is taking decisive action to address it.
To strengthen operations, the government said additional resources have been deployed to support waste evacuation efforts, while strategic interventions are being introduced to improve collection efficiency and disposal processes. The governor has also directed the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, and other relevant agencies to intensify their activities across affected areas.
The government highlighted the scale of the challenge, noting that Lagos generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making it one of the highest waste-producing cities in Africa. Despite the current difficulties, officials described the situation as temporary, adding that significant progress has already been recorded in several locations and that residents should expect further improvements in the coming days.
The state government also called on residents, market associations, businesses, and community leaders to support ongoing sanitation efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding activities that obstruct roads, drainage channels, and designated collection points. It reaffirmed its commitment to upholding environmental standards, safeguarding public health, and ensuring a cleaner Lagos for all residents.
