The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level female law student identified as Tomisin, while calling for calm as efforts intensify to secure her safe return.
In a statement issued by the SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, it was disclosed that Tomisin had travelled on a religious retreat alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants. She is also the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and serves as Vice-President of the Scripture Union UI chapter.
The union dismissed reports claiming that eight University of Ibadan students were missing, clarifying that Tomisin is the only student from the institution currently unaccounted for. It said it had begun necessary engagements to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Adeboye, the union has already contacted relevant religious organisations and security agencies to support efforts aimed at locating and rescuing the student. He assured that the situation is being actively monitored.
Reports indicate that Tomisin went missing while returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, after communication with her was lost en route. Concern over her whereabouts increased after she failed to sit for her faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday.
Further accounts revealed that another University of Ibadan student from the Department of Music who attended the conference returned safely. However, the vehicle conveying the General Director reportedly remains unaccounted for. The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ademola Lewis, confirmed awareness of the incident, noting that the university had not been informed in advance about the trip. He added that efforts were ongoing to secure the student’s safe return and urged members of the university community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
