The eagerly awaited Group K clash between Portugal and Colombia at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the most sought-after group-stage fixture of the tournament, attracting an unprecedented surge in ticket demand.
According to reports by TNT Sports and The Athletic, more than five million ticket requests were recorded within the first 24 hours after tickets for the match became available.
The blockbuster encounter is scheduled to take place on Saturday evening at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
TNT Sports reported on Saturday that the Portugal-Colombia fixture has emerged as the most in-demand group-stage game of the World Cup, with resale ticket prices soaring beyond $7,000.
The report noted that some tickets on the secondary market were selling for over $7,000, exceeding the average entry price for major sporting events, including the Super Bowl.
The Athletic, in a report published by The New York Times, also confirmed the extraordinary demand, citing sources who described the Group K showdown as the most sought-after ticket among all 72 group-stage matches at the tournament.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez admitted that he had to purchase tickets for his family months in advance due to the expected demand.
"Well, it means I had to buy tickets for my family in November. That's what it means," Martinez said during his pre-match press conference.
"Because I knew it was going to be difficult to get tickets."
The highly anticipated encounter brings together two football giants in what many observers have described as a virtual knockout match.
Portugal, led by veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo, head into the game with four points from two matches, including an emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, during which the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored twice.
Colombia, on the other hand, have enjoyed an impressive campaign and currently top Group K with maximum points.
Interest in the match has been driven by several factors, including the rare meeting between both countries, the presence of world-class stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Díaz, and other top players, as well as the venue in football-loving Miami, home to large Portuguese and Colombian communities.
The fixture is expected to attract a capacity crowd and will play a decisive role in determining the final standings in Group K ahead of the Round of 32.
Social media platforms have also been flooded with reactions from football fans, many expressing excitement over the match while others lament the soaring ticket prices.
Although premium seats are currently listed for between $6,000 and $7,000, some individuals have advertised tickets on X (formerly Twitter) for between $470 and $600, hoping to capitalise on the overwhelming demand.
Several resale offers have also appeared online, with individual sellers listing tickets at prices ranging from $470 to $600, highlighting the intense activity in the secondary ticket market.
For football fans across Africa, including Nigerians and members of the African diaspora in the United States, the match has generated additional interest following the impressive performances of several African nations that have advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. local time in Miami (12:30 a.m. Nigerian time on Sunday). With both teams boasting quality in attack and defence, the encounter is widely expected to be one of the standout matches of the tournament.
DIP CONNECT ONLINE NEWS reports that the Portugal-Colombia showdown has already broken ticket demand records and is expected to deliver one of the most exciting contests of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.
