The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a suspected car thief and recovered a Hyundai Santa vehicle following an attempted vehicle theft in Maitama, Abuja.
The incident occurred on September 15, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. along Tigris Crescent, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, after the Command received a distress call concerning an attempt to steal a parked vehicle.
Following the alert, operatives from the Maitama Police Division immediately proceeded to the location, where they apprehended a man identified as Mohammed Aliyu inside the vehicle while allegedly attempting to start it and drive away.
Preliminary investigations showed that the vehicle, a black Hyundai Santa belonging to Mr. Ikechukwu, had been parked while its owner attended an appointment at a nearby office.
On returning to the vehicle, Ikechukwu reportedly noticed an unfamiliar person inside it. He raised an alarm, drawing the attention of people in the surrounding area and leading to the intervention of the police.
The Command further disclosed that investigations had established that the suspect had previously been arrested in connection with two separate car theft cases handled by the Garki and Zuba Police Divisions.
According to the police, the suspect had served a prison sentence and was released from Keffi Prison in April 2026.
Mohammed Aliyu remains in police custody as investigations continue. The Command said he will be arraigned before a court after the conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, FCAI, urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station.
