The Federal Government has strengthened its efforts to advance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through a new academic partnership between the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), which will offer two joint postgraduate degree programmes in Nigeria.
The initiative, championed by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, is designed to improve the quality of tertiary education, enhance the international standing of Nigerian universities and equip students with relevant skills to compete in an increasingly digital and technology-driven economy.
The two programmes, an MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Technologies and an MA in Digital Media and Communications, are scheduled to begin in September 2027. Both institutions are also considering extending the partnership to undergraduate programmes in disciplines aligned with labour-market needs.
Speaking at the launch, Alausa described the development as a major milestone for Nigeria’s education sector, noting that the country was increasingly attracting international academic partnerships capable of bringing globally recognised learning opportunities closer to its citizens.
He said the initiative reflected President Tinubu’s commitment to pursuing ambitious projects that deliver sustainable economic benefits, adding that the administration’s reforms were creating an environment in which Nigeria could become a preferred destination for quality education and international talent.
“Today is a great day for Nigeria. We now have a country where we are daring to do big things. Today, we have transnational education in action, with one of the world’s leading universities partnering with one of Nigeria’s best universities to bring international-standard education to our country. This is a first for Nigeria and the beginning of many more to come,” the Minister said.
According to Alausa, the partnership is consistent with the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), particularly its Education Quality Assurance pillar, as well as the Federal Government’s Transnational Education (TNE) Policy.
He explained that the arrangement would widen access to internationally developed academic programmes, strengthen the capacity of Nigerian institutions and enable more students to acquire high-quality postgraduate qualifications without the financial and logistical demands associated with studying abroad.
The Minister added that the courses were selected to address the growing demand for expertise in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital communication. He expressed optimism that the programmes would produce graduates capable of establishing businesses, creating jobs and contributing to Nigeria’s economic and social development.
The MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Technologies will expose students to specialised areas such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, large language models, data management and AI ethics.
The MA in Digital Media and Communications, on the other hand, will cover digital cultures, research methods, content production, broadcasting and contemporary media practices. The programme is expected to prepare graduates for careers in journalism and other segments of the communications industry.
The Provost of the University of Birmingham, Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams, said the institution was pleased to establish the programmes with UNILAG, describing the collaboration as an important contribution to Nigeria’s higher education and talent-development priorities.
He stressed that universities must prepare graduates for the demands of rapidly evolving global economies by promoting practical skills, entrepreneurship and access to broader employment opportunities.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, described the partnership as a significant move towards strengthening the international profile of Nigerian higher education through mutual respect, shared responsibility and joint knowledge creation.
Ogunsola said the collaboration would promote practical learning, update academic curricula, improve the university’s global visibility and encourage research in emerging fields, particularly artificial intelligence and digital communications.
Also speaking, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, said the programmes reflected the strong educational relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria and their shared determination to prepare young people for the changing demands of the global economy.
He noted that building expertise in artificial intelligence, data science and digital communications would encourage innovation, create new opportunities and contribute to sustainable economic development.
The Country Director of the British Council Nigeria, Donna McGowan, also welcomed the initiative, describing transnational education as an effective means of promoting knowledge exchange and developing relevant professional skills.
She said the partnership would make quality British education more accessible to Nigerian students while helping to develop the skilled workforce required to support national growth and prosperity.
The launch follows the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Birmingham and UNILAG on January 29, 2026.
The programmes were developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC), through a Transnational Education Unit established in Lagos.
The agreement underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to build a tertiary education system that responds to labour-market requirements, improves institutional standards and increases the international recognition of Nigerian universities.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Alausa said the Tinubu administration would continue to pursue strategic international education partnerships through NESRI, strengthen quality assurance and expand access to globally competitive learning opportunities within Nigeria.
He emphasised that the broader objective was to equip Nigerian students with relevant knowledge and skills, encourage entrepreneurship and job creation, and develop an education system capable of driving innovation, economic growth and sustainable national development.
