Victims were among nine passengers returning from a training programme in Benue as seven others escaped the attackers
Two visually impaired Nigerians have been kidnapped by suspected gunmen in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, with their abductors reportedly demanding ₦50 million for their release.
The victims were travelling back to Jos from Benue State after attending a scheduled training programme when their vehicle came under attack on Monday night.
According to Shindol Aaron, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Plateau State, nine people were travelling in the vehicle when the incident occurred. Seven managed to escape, but the two visually impaired passengers were taken away.
Aaron, who confirmed the development during a telephone conversation, explained that the passengers had initially travelled from Jos to participate in the training in Benue State.
However, after receiving information that the programme had been postponed, they decided to return to their base in Plateau State.
The journey back turned tragic when suspected kidnappers intercepted them along the Riyom axis at approximately 8pm on Monday.
Aaron disclosed that he had received information that the abductors had contacted someone and were demanding money, although he had not personally spoken with them.
Abductors reportedly demand ₦50m
A member of the association, who also confirmed the incident, disclosed that the kidnappers had established contact and were demanding ₦50 million before releasing the two victims.
The reported ransom demand has raised concerns among members of the disability community, who are worried about how such a huge amount could be raised to secure the victims' freedom.
The association's leadership said the incident had already been reported to security authorities, while efforts were ongoing to facilitate the safe return of the abducted persons.
Aaron added that the driver of the vehicle had also visited a police station to formally report the attack.
Police yet to issue official response
Attempts to obtain comments from the Plateau State Police Command's spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as of the time the report was prepared.
Meanwhile, the abduction has heightened concerns over the safety of vulnerable travellers along the Riyom axis, particularly following the targeting of two persons with visual impairments.
The victims' whereabouts and the progress of efforts to secure their release remain unknown.
