Kwankwaso Condemns Defectors from NNPP to APC, Calls It ‘Highest Level of Betrayal

Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly criticized recent defections from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a grave betrayal of the party and its ideals.

Kwankwaso made the statement on Friday evening at his Miller Road residence in Kano while addressing hundreds of supporters from Takai Local Government Area who refused to defect to the APC.

The defection of Senator Abdulrahman Kawu, representing Kano South Senatorial District, along with some federal lawmakers, has stirred political tension in the state. Although Kwankwaso did not mention any names directly, he referred pointedly to Kano South, where, according to him, the people rejected inducements like “superghetti, N200, and Atamfa (wrappers)” and instead voted with patience and principle for the NNPP.

“But those who won the election among us decided to abandon the masses and join those who have no concern for the people but are only after what they will gain for themselves and their families,” Kwankwaso said. “There is no worse political sin than leaving the party that gave you opportunity and support. This is the highest level of betrayal.”

He urged young people to be cautious of politicians who prioritize personal gain over public service. Appreciating the loyalty of supporters who chose to remain with NNPP, Kwankwaso said, “Those who betrayed Kwankwasiyya will regret their actions. Fighting Kwankwasiyya is not an easy task—they will only realize this when they attempt it.”

Also speaking at the event, NNPP State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, commended the loyalists for standing firm and assured them of equal treatment within the party. The gathering was attended by Senator Rufai Sani Hanga (Kano Central), former Commissioner of Religious Affairs Falali, and Takai LGA Chairman Ibrahim Faruruwa, among others.
