FG, OGP Stakeholders Renew Commitment to Youth Values, Accountability, and Open Governance

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration between government institutions and civil society through the Open Government Partnership (OGP) platform, with a renewed focus on youth development, governance transparency, and national values.

The Honourable Minister of Youth Development and Co-Chair of the Global OGP, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, made this known during a high-level engagement with civil society actors and representatives of the OGP Secretariat. He emphasized the vital role of non-state actors in promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in governance.

“The OGP platform continues to be a powerful mechanism for sustained engagement between Ministries and civil society,” Olawande stated. He lauded the OGP Secretariat and all stakeholders, commending their commitment to the success of the initiative.

He further acknowledged the mentorship of elder statesmen and civil society leaders, which he said has played a pivotal role in the Ministry’s achievements. “Their values and guidance continue to inspire us. The real issue in Nigeria is not a lack of accountability structures, but a decline in our collective values. We must focus on addressing these core issues.”

The Minister underscored the need for value-based leadership and the promotion of ethical standards among Nigerian youth, stressing that national development cannot be achieved without civic responsibility and integrity. “We must reawaken our young people to the essence of ethics, integrity, and service to the nation,” he said.

Incoming Co-Chair of the Global OGP, Mr. Soji Apampa, commended the Minister’s leadership and reiterated the importance of continued dialogue around the future of the OGP in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for sustainable leadership, the finalization of Nigeria’s National Action Plan, and securing presidential assent.

Also present, Mr. Aiden Eyakuze, CEO of the Global OGP, highlighted the value of inclusive governance and collaboration between ministries and civil society. He praised the OGP Secretariat’s contributions and echoed the call for value reorientation among Nigerian youth.

“What Nigeria needs now is a return to foundational values,” Eyakuze said. “Accountability mechanisms exist, but the erosion of core values remains a major concern. We must all strive to be authentic and purposeful.”

The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to promoting open governance, enhancing youth participation, and advancing inclusive development through transparency, accountability, and the restoration of shared national values.
