Peace Corps of Nigeria Visits Borno Ministry of Information and Internal Security

Borno Government Reiterates Commitment to Safe Schools and Public Security

The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, fspsp, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting efforts that promote peace, stability, and the protection of public institutions, including schools.

Prof. Tar gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Borno State Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Musa Mamman, on Monday, July 27, 2025, at the Ministerial Headquarters, Musa Usman Secretariat, Maiduguri.

In his remarks, Commandant Mamman expressed gratitude for the warm reception and acknowledged the Commissioner’s ongoing support. “This is the first time we are engaging with a sitting Commissioner who has shown consistent support for our mission. We deeply appreciate your encouragement,” he said.

He also informed the Commissioner that the Federal Ministry of Education had officially issued a letter permitting the Peace Corps to assist in securing public schools across Nigeria—a move aimed at enhancing school safety nationwide.

Responding, Prof. Tar commended the Peace Corps leadership for adhering to legal procedures and pushing toward formal recognition as a voluntary security agency. “I commend your leadership for following due process in securing your operational legitimacy. Please continue with the documentation process, including CAC registration and the signing of an MOU with the Federal Government. That was how agencies like NSCDC came into existence,” he advised.

The Commissioner assured the delegation that the Borno State Government would consider involving Peace Corps personnel in the implementation of the safe schools protocol, provided all legal and statutory requirements are met. He emphasized that Borno’s safe school strategy involves collaboration with both military and paramilitary agencies, ensuring that schools are secured not only through infrastructure but also through active presence and monitoring.

The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors' register and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
