Youth Urged to Tap Opportunities in Nigeria’s Non-Oil Economy : NEXIM Boss Says Passion and Innovation Key to Unlocking Export Growth

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Abba Bello, has called on young Nigerians to channel their creativity and energy into the non-oil economy, describing it as an “opportunity port” that can secure the country’s future.

Speaking at an interactive session with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) youth wing in Abuja on Tuesday, Bello stressed that Nigeria’s greatest untapped potential lies in agriculture, services, creative industries, and solid minerals.

He encouraged young entrepreneurs to invest in areas they are most passionate about, noting that with focus and innovation, they can drive growth and create jobs. “Whether in the agricultural value chain, services, the creative sector, or solid minerals, we are operating far below capacity today. With energy and commitment, young Nigerians can change that,” Bello said.

Reflecting on NEXIM’s interventions since 2018, Bello pointed out how targeted financing had transformed the shea industry, where the bank has supported the establishment of four industrial processing plants across Ogun, Niger, and Kano States. He noted that the Federal Government’s recent decision to restrict raw shea exports would ensure steady supply for these new factories, strengthen value addition, and boost employment.

Beyond shea, Bello urged policymakers to rethink the export of raw agricultural commodities and instead promote domestic processing that keeps jobs and wealth in Nigeria. “We must start producing more at home so we can compete globally while lifting our people out of poverty,” he said.

The NEXIM boss assured young Nigerians that the non-oil sector offers vast possibilities for those willing to innovate. “With passion and resilience, our youth can open new doors for Nigeria’s export economy,” he concluded.
