Adeleke to Announce New Party Before December 13 — Osun Commissioner

The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, has said Governor Ademola Adeleke will officially announce his new political party on or before December 13, following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Alimi spoke on Tuesday during a political programme on Rave FM in Osogbo, where he confirmed that the governor had left the PDP after prolonged internal disputes within the party.

According to earlier reports, Adeleke submitted his resignation letter to PDP officials in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government Area, on November 4, 2025.

Alimi explained that the governor’s decision was not sudden but had been under consideration for some time.

“The Governor of Osun State and the Asiwaju of Ede has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party. He had written his resignation letter for quite a long time,” he said.

He urged residents of the state to remain calm and continue supporting the governor, adding that the decision was long overdue.

“We appreciate the people for their support, and we can only ask them to continue to stand with the governor,” he said, quoting a Yoruba adage that describes the people as the shield and strength of their leader.

The commissioner said the national leadership crisis within the PDP was one of the major factors that forced the governor’s exit, especially with the governorship election drawing closer.

He noted that the situation had become more critical as the window for governorship nominations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is due to close on December 15.

“The governor is pleased with the reaction so far, and people understand that if not for the national crisis and division in the party, which affects nomination, he would not have resigned.

“Our election is coming up in August, and the INEC nomination window closes on December 15. That is why the governor had to take this step,” Alimi said.

Responding to reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was happy about Adeleke’s resignation, Alimi dismissed such claims as untrue. He accused certain PDP members of working against the party in the interests of rival political groups.

He said the APC in Osun mistakenly believed Adeleke would remain in the PDP and become vulnerable to legal challenges arising from the national crisis within the party.

“They thought they could use the crisis against him, but the governor is smarter than that. Now they know he is always one step ahead of them, and they are not happy,” Alimi stated.

On when Adeleke would formally align with a new party, the commissioner said negotiations are continuing but assured that the public would know his next move before December 13.

“By December 12 or 13, everyone will know where the governor is going, because the deadline for party primaries and nominations is December 15,” he added.

Alimi concluded that Adeleke’s resignation could have been avoided if the PDP had not been divided at the national level.

“Had the party not been factionalised, there would have been no reason for the governor to leave,” he said.
