LASU Bans Unauthorised Skits, Filming After Bandit-Prank Scare

The management of Lagos State University has issued a strict warning to students, staff, and visitors against producing offensive or unauthorised skits on campus, following a scare triggered by a prank video that mimicked a bandit invasion.

The video, titled “Bandits Prank on Lasuites”, was recorded on December 5 and showed individuals dressed as armed bandits storming the Ojo campus in a commando-style fashion. The scene caused real panic as students and passers-by fled, believing the attack was genuine. It was later confirmed to be a staged skit.

In a statement released on Friday, LASU’s spokesperson, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, expressed concern over the increasing use of campus facilities for inappropriate and misleading content, especially by students.

According to the statement, while the university supports creativity and responsible self-expression, some recent skits have been “offensive, inappropriate, and misrepresent the values and image of the institution.”

The university has now directed that anyone wishing to engage in any form of filming—including skits, vox pops, short films, promotional videos, or other audiovisual recordings—must obtain prior approval from the Centre for Information and Public Relations. This applies to all university premises, hostels, and adjoining facilities.

LASU added that, as part of measures to safeguard the campus, the use of drones is also prohibited without formal authorisation from the university’s security department, citing safety and privacy concerns.

The management emphasised that the institution prioritises its reputation and is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and academically focused environment for all.
