The Federal Ministry of Education has unveiled the Student Venture Capital Grant, a landmark initiative that the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described as a bold national investment in Nigeria’s future. He noted that the grant aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is designed to ignite innovation, strengthen research excellence, and nurture a vibrant entrepreneurial culture across tertiary institutions.
Dr. Alausa explained that the programme is being implemented by the Ministry and TETFund in partnership with the Bank of Industry, Afara Initiative, the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Center, Afrilabs, Google, and other high-impact organisations. The initiative will provide up to fifty million naira in equity-free seed funding for student-led ventures with strong potential to attract both local and global investors.
He stated that the structure of the programme is designed to identify exceptional student talent, expand opportunities for success, and instill the confidence needed to innovate. Beneficiaries will have access to intensive incubation, expert mentorship, modern tools, and the networks required to build viable enterprises.
The grant is open to students in federal, state, and private tertiary institutions, with preference given to those in year three and above, while younger students may participate as team members. Eligible projects must focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences and must operate under a CAC registered business name.
Dr. Alausa further noted that all proposals will undergo thorough evaluation, with applicants receiving constructive feedback. Teams with similar ideas may be paired to strengthen collaboration and shared learning. He explained that while not every idea may become a startup, many are expected to evolve into patents or licensable technologies capable of delivering national and global impact. Applications are being received through a dedicated portal which opened on 17 November and will close on 23 January 2026, after which shortlisted teams will pitch before a twelve member expert panel. The Minister encouraged students to seize the opportunity, describing the initiative as a mindset shift that supplements academic learning with practical innovation.
In her remarks, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Saidu Ahmad, described the grant as a transformative platform for strengthening innovation and entrepreneurship across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. She stressed that campuses are not only centres of learning but also hubs where solutions to national challenges are developed. She added that many promising student projects have stalled due to inadequate funding and limited support systems. According to her, the SVCG addresses this gap by offering equity-free grants of up to fifty million naira for advanced STEMM projects, supported by incubation, mentorship, modern tools, and an AI powered evaluation system. She encouraged students nationwide to submit their most ambitious ideas and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing future innovators and job creators.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on University Education, Abubakar Fulata, stated that the initiative marks Nigeria’s transition from inherited colonial education models to one that prioritizes national development and industrialization. He urged the Ministry to consider extending similar opportunities to students in the Arts.
Former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, whose board awards a one hundred thousand dollar annual prize for scientific innovation, commended the initiative. He noted that it aligns with national efforts to strengthen scientific research and will support students and mentors in producing globally relevant innovations that address local challenges.
Providing programme statistics, the National Programme Coordinator of the SVCG Special Programme Unit, Mr. Adebayo Onigbanjo, announced that the portal has received 17,914 applications from 402 institutions, including 346 public and 56 private institutions. He added that more than one thousand entries have already been fully submitted. He explained that the programme aims to close investment gaps and build investor confidence in early stage university-led innovations.
In his goodwill message, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Oladoja Olusola, stated that students are experiencing improved stability in the education sector under President Tinubu. He noted that academic activities have continued smoothly, except for a brief warning strike by university lecturers which resulted from miscommunication.
The Federal Ministry of Education reiterates its commitment to supporting innovative ideas, strengthening student capabilities, and building systems that empower young Nigerians to shape the nation’s future with confidence, creativity, and excellence.
