Nigeria’s NYSC Embarks on Strategic Reforms to Boost National Development

Jos, Nigeria – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reiterated its commitment to institutional reforms and enhanced service delivery, emphasizing the Scheme’s evolving role in national development.

The announcement was made by NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Annual Management Conference (AMC) in Jos, Plateau State. Themed “NYSC as a Catalyst for National Development: Tackling Present Challenges and Charting Sustainable Solutions”, the conference brought together managers of the Scheme to review operations, share insights, and chart strategies for sustainable growth.

Brig. Gen. Nafiu highlighted that the Scheme has matured beyond symbolic nation-building to deliver measurable socio-economic impact, urging managers to maintain public trust and meet the expectations of the Federal Government, Corps Members, and stakeholders nationwide.

“Our internal review of the past year has shown that embracing change is essential for sustainable growth. The NYSC is now positioned to contribute directly and tangibly to Nigeria’s national development,” he said.

In a keynote message, Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, represented by his Deputy Josephine Piyo, commended the NYSC for its enduring role in fostering national unity, youth empowerment, and socio-economic development. He highlighted the Scheme’s contributions across education, health, rural infrastructure, sports, and self-employment through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

Governor Mutfwang also disclosed that his administration had begun the renovation of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Mangu and released several hectares of land for agricultural initiatives to further enhance the Scheme’s contribution to Nigeria’s food security efforts.

The Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, in a goodwill message, praised the NYSC Management and staff for their commitment to youth development. He called on managers to leverage technical effectiveness, share experiences, and introduce innovative solutions to enhance the Scheme’s impact and service delivery.

NYSC Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Nura Umar, described the conference as a critical platform for assessing performance, identifying operational gaps, and collectively developing sustainable solutions to strengthen the Scheme’s operations.

The 2026 AMC underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its national service framework, ensuring that the NYSC continues to serve as a strategic engine for youth empowerment, national cohesion, and socio-economic development.
