Ondo Govt Seals Collapsed Two-Storey Building Site, Issues Warning to Developers

The Ondo State Government has sealed off the site of a two-storey building that collapsed in the Adegbola area of Akure, the state capital.

The building, which was still under construction, collapsed at about 3:30pm on Tuesday, leaving several site workers injured.

Following the incident, the State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Sunday Olajide, ordered the immediate closure of the construction site.

Olajide, who visited the scene on Tuesday evening alongside officials of his ministry, said the state government would immediately commence an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent a recurrence.

The commissioner warned building developers and contractors across the state against the use of substandard materials, stressing that such practices could lead to avoidable loss of lives and property.

“This is a call to all developers and building contractors to always obtain the necessary permits and approvals before commencing any construction project and to strictly adhere to the approved standards throughout the construction process,” he said.

While noting that no life was lost in the incident, Olajide expressed concern that several site workers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

He added that although the government had sealed the construction site, additional measures would be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
