Anti-Corruption Agency Detains El-Rufai After Fresh Arrest Linked to Ongoing Probe

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed that former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai is currently in its custody following his re-arrest.

The confirmation came late Wednesday after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) took El-Rufai into custody shortly after he had been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he had spent two days undergoing questioning.

ICPC spokesperson J. Okor Odey said in a brief statement that the former governor is being detained in connection with ongoing investigations. The agency stated that as of the close of work on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, El-Rufai remained in its custody as part of those inquiries.

The former governor had earlier disclosed that he received an invitation from the commission the previous Friday and alleged there was an attempt to arrest him at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon his return to Nigeria. In a post on X, he said his lawyer responded to the invitation, assuring the commission he would honour it on Wednesday.

El-Rufai also confirmed that the EFCC had invited him. He honoured that invitation on Monday and was questioned for two days over allegations of fraud linked to his tenure in office between 2015 and 2023.

Meanwhile, the DSS has reportedly filed charges against him following remarks he made during a televised interview in which he spoke about the alleged monitoring of the phone of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
