Bayelsa Deputy Governor Akpe Pledges Humble, Service-Driven Leadership

Newly sworn-in Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Peter Akpe, has promised to serve with humility, accountability, and collective responsibility, stressing that public office is a call to serve rather than an avenue for personal glory.

Akpe made the declaration during a reception at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall inside Government House, Yenagoa, where political leaders, clerics, family members, and well-wishers gathered from across the country.

He said leadership must be guided by faith, discipline, openness to counsel, and genuine concern for citizens’ welfare, noting that public office is “a burden of trust that demands sacrifice.” He urged Christians and residents to remain prayerful and constructively engaged, emphasising that governance succeeds when leaders and citizens work together.

“This responsibility did not come by my own making,” he stated, adding that he considers the role a privilege to serve with reverence for God, respect for the people, and commitment to doing what is right.

Flanked by his wife, Dr Favour Akpe, the deputy governor said he did not lobby for the office and described his emergence as divine providence. He thanked Governor Douye Diri, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and other stakeholders for their confidence, pledging to support policies that improve livelihoods and strengthen institutions.

He said the support he has received since his appointment reflects the expectations placed on him, adding that he owes the state greater commitment, listening, and service.

Chairman of the occasion and former deputy governor Gboribiogha John Jonah praised Governor Diri’s decision, describing Akpe’s appointment as wise and timely while urging residents to back the administration for sustainable development.

In separate goodwill messages, Secretary to the State Government Nimibofa Ayawei and House of Representatives member Mitema Obordor congratulated Akpe, describing him as competent and principled and pledging support for his success.

Also speaking, former deputy governor Peremoboere Ebebi said Akpe’s steady rise in public service was unsurprising, citing his strong administrative record and expressing confidence that his partnership with the governor would positively steer the state’s affairs.
