Deyemi Okanlawon has publicly voiced support for singer Simi as controversy continues over her remarks on rape, insisting that calls to end sexual violence against women should not be met with deflection.
Posting on X Monday, Deyemi wrote: “When women say ‘STOP rap*ng women’… Your response cannot be ‘what abt men/children’ neither can it be ‘what abt false accusers’ nor anything else. Your reply MUST only be YES!!! You can start your own separate conversation about anything else at another time/place.”
His reaction follows heated online criticism sparked by Simi’s strong stance against rape, which resurfaced alongside old tweets critics have recently circulated.
The renewed scrutiny comes amid discussion surrounding a rape allegation involving a woman identified as Mirabel, which has fueled online debate.
Earlier, Simi addressed the backlash, explaining that the resurfaced posts were written 14 years ago when she was 23, working at her mother’s daycare while pursuing music. She said the tweets reflected everyday experiences at the time and were never intended to be inappropriate.
“I haven’t been on Twitter today but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention and I can’t not address it. 14 years ago, I was 23, so I was definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives,” she stated.
She emphasized she has “never been depraved” and reiterated that she has consistently spoken against rape and sexual assault long before fame. According to her, some of the old tweets are being removed by her team because of the sensitivity for her family, though she initially did not want them deleted.
“I have always spoken against rape and sexual assault even before you knew I existed. It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am… I said stop raping women. I stand by it,” she added.
