Kidnapped Akure North Couple Freed After Four Days as N5m Ransom Paid

A couple abducted last Friday at Ilu-Abo community in Akure North Local Government Area have regained their freedom after spending four days in captivity, following the payment of a ₦5 million ransom.

The victims, identified as Mr. Jamiu Olawale and his wife, were kidnapped on Friday night shortly after returning from their shop. According to reports, gunmen stormed their residence and whisked them away to an undisclosed location.

A family source, who requested anonymity, confirmed their release on Tuesday night, noting that ransom was paid to secure their freedom. “Jamiu and his wife were freed by their captors on Tuesday night and have since reunited with their family,” the source said.

It was gathered that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦40 million but later reduced the amount to ₦12 million during negotiations, before finally agreeing to accept ₦5 million.

The incident heightened anxiety among residents of Ilu-Abo and neighbouring communities within Akure North, where reports of kidnapping and armed attacks have risen in recent times.

Police authorities had earlier confirmed the abduction and announced the deployment of tactical operatives to comb surrounding forests in an effort to rescue the victims.
