Kwara College of Education, Oro Reopens After Security Closure

The Kwara State College of Education, Oro, in Irepodun Local Government Area, has resumed academic and administrative activities following a directive from the state government. The reopening comes amid improved security conditions in the area.

An internal memorandum dated February 2, 2026 (ref: CEO/ADMIN/27/Vol.1/268) signed by Deputy Registrar, Information, Protocol and Publicity, Mrs. Lawal Taibat Saka-Bolanta, confirmed the resumption. The memo, issued from the office of the Registrar and addressed to staff and students, stated that academic and administrative operations would begin immediately. “In line with the directive of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, I write to inform staff and students of the re-opening of the college with immediate effect,” the memo read.

The management also expressed gratitude to the state government, the Ministry of Tertiary Education, and other stakeholders for their support.

The move follows the Kwara State Government’s announcement on February 1, 2026, that schools across the state would reopen after months of closure due to security concerns. Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, noted that the security situation has improved but urged continued vigilance. “The government deems the situation now to be a lot better than it was before. Even so, we continue to maintain vigilance,” he said.

The closure of the college, reported earlier by local media, occurred following security threats in the area, forcing students to vacate the campus and disrupting academic activities. Similar closures affected primary and secondary schools in November 2025 after escalating insecurity in border and forested communities due to banditry and kidnappings.

The state government has credited sustained military and security operations in recent weeks with neutralising criminal elements and restoring calm in previously affected areas. Security agencies continue to maintain a strong presence in vulnerable communities, supported by intelligence gathering and community engagement to prevent a resurgence of criminal activities.

Authorities have called on parents, teachers, and school administrators to cooperate with security agencies, assuring that measures are in place to safeguard students and education workers across Kwara State.

The reopening signals a return to normalcy for the college and underscores the state government’s commitment to safe and uninterrupted learning.
