LAWMA Cracks Down on Illegal Waste Disposal on Lagos Island, Seizes Carts and Arrests One

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its enforcement operations on Lagos Island, seizing several waste carts and arresting one individual during an early-morning raid aimed at curbing illegal dumping.

The operation targeted unauthorised waste disposal activities in areas previously cleared by the Authority.

The raid, conducted at dawn, saw multiple waste carts seized at Isale-Eko, while a 42-year-old man, Muritala Suleiman from Zamfara State, was arrested around 1:31 a.m. for illegally dumping waste at Tinubu Square.

LAWMA explained that the operation was strategically timed, as illegal dumping often occurs under the cover of darkness to avoid detection.

Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the enforcement drive is part of a sustained effort to strengthen deterrence and protect rehabilitated sites from renewed misuse.

He added, “Our Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement operatives have been strategically deployed across the state to eliminate persistent black spots and ensure environmental sustainability along major corridors.”

The agency urged Lagos residents to adhere strictly to approved waste disposal channels and support ongoing initiatives to maintain clean and safe public spaces.
