Nigeria Advances Green Jobs Push as Government Unveils Solar-Powered Tricycles for Youth Employment

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has boosted its youth empowerment and clean-energy drive with the rollout of upgraded solar-powered electric tricycles developed through a partnership with House of Destiny and the National Commercial Tricycles and Motorcycles Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria.

Receiving representatives of the partner organisations in Abuja, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Maryam Ismaila Keshinro, described the initiative as a practical intervention aimed at reducing hardship among vulnerable young people while expanding access to sustainable livelihoods.

She likened the collaboration between the ministry, House of Destiny, and the transport association to “the three wheels of a tricycle — each essential, balanced, and mutually reinforcing in driving youth empowerment forward.” She praised the partners for addressing youth challenges through entrepreneurship, skills development, and structured economic opportunities, stressing that empowering young Nigerians is a national imperative.

Keshinro added that the programme aligns with the policy direction of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes youth inclusion and innovation as pillars of national development. She emphasized that the tricycles represent more than mobility tools, calling them instruments of employment, dignity, and self-reliance, while urging beneficiaries to refine and localize solar-powered solutions that support the country’s transition to a green economy.

Chief Executive Officer of House of Destiny, Israel Olajumoke, said the project demonstrates how strategic collaboration can generate jobs, stimulate innovation, and create sustainable income streams for young people. He noted that the programme also promotes women’s participation in sectors traditionally dominated by men, arguing that inclusive empowerment strengthens communities and broadens economic access.

Representing the association’s president, Usman Buba Gwoza, Secretary Madonna Corosi disclosed that 20 upgraded solar tricycles were recently distributed in Yobe State, bringing the total deployed across multiple states to 74. She said the initiative supports entrepreneurship, renewable energy adoption, and wider access to economic opportunity nationwide.
