Benin Palace Scandal: Traditional Council Moves to Sanction Queen, Summons Streamer Peller

The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has issued a strong warning of impending sanctions following the unauthorised visit of popular Nigerian streamer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller, to the revered Benin Palace.

In a statement released on Tuesday by BTC Secretary Frank Irabor, the council described the incident as a grave violation of palace protocol and an affront to the sanctity of the historic institution.

Peller, currently on a nationwide tour, reportedly gained access to the palace on March 6, 2026, where he was received by certain palace officials. However, the council condemned the manner of his entry, insisting it bypassed long-established procedures governing access to the sacred grounds.

According to the BTC, the incident amounts to a desecration of the palace and has caused embarrassment, as well as a disturbance within its precincts. The council stressed that the palace is not a venue for casual visits or content creation, but a sacred institution rooted in centuries-old traditions.

As part of disciplinary actions, a palace chief implicated in the breach has been placed on indefinite suspension. Additionally, a staff member identified as Omuemu has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged to court for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised access.

The council also confirmed that a palace queen accused of aiding the visit is currently undergoing internal disciplinary proceedings, which could result in her removal in accordance with Benin customs and traditions.

Furthermore, the BTC has summoned Peller to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain the circumstances surrounding his visit. The council expressed concern that he has yet to honour the invitation, warning that failure to comply may lead to legal action.

“The council is therefore demanding that Mr Adelaja presents himself immediately and tenders an unreserved written apology for the embarrassment caused,” Irabor stated.

Reaffirming its commitment to preserving the dignity of the Benin throne, the council warned that any attempt to undermine the institution would attract strict consequences.
