The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended lawmaker Dickson Ovat Agbor, representing Obubra I State Constituency, following allegations that he physically assaulted his wife.
The suspension was passed during a plenary session on Thursday, March 5, 2026, after a motion moved by Assembly member Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo. Lawmakers described Agbor’s alleged conduct as inconsistent with the ethical standards and dignity expected of public representatives.
Speaker Elvert Ayambem condemned the behaviour, stressing that the House is committed to upholding discipline, integrity, and the trust placed in legislators by constituents. Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant‑at‑Arms immediately after the resolution was passed.
A special committee has been established to investigate the allegations and report back to the House for further action.
In a public statement, Agbor’s wife, Glory Agbor, requested privacy and noted that the matter had been “resolved within the family.” She also announced her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association and apologized for the publicity surrounding the incident.
The Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, and his wife condemned the lawmaker’s alleged conduct as irresponsible, while the Nigeria Police Force in the state declined to comment, noting that they could only speak on cases under formal investigation.
The indefinite suspension remains in effect as the House awaits the committee’s findings, sending a clear signal that domestic misconduct by public officials will not be tolerated.
