Drogba Slams CAF Over AFCON Verdict, Warns of Damage to African Football’s Credibility

African football legend Didier Drogba has strongly criticised the recent decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Board to overturn Senegal’s AFCON victory over Morocco, describing the move as a blow to the credibility and integrity of the game on the continent.

In an emotional statement, Drogba expressed deep concern over the reversal of what was widely celebrated as a historic triumph for Senegal during the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year.

He recalled how the victory had united fans across the continent from Dakar to Abidjan, Lagos to Nairobi highlighting the passion, sacrifice, and pride that defined the moment.

However, the former Ivory Coast captain lamented that a decision taken months later “in a boardroom” has now altered that narrative, stripping away a result that was earned on the pitch.

“This is not just about one trophy,” Drogba stated. “It is about the credibility, the dignity, and the soul of African football.”

While acknowledging the importance of rules and discipline, he warned that delayed rulings of such magnitude risk creating confusion, doubt, and disillusionment among fans and stakeholders. According to him, such developments also expose African football to criticism on the global stage and could undermine the reputation of the AFCON tournament.

Drogba further stressed that Africa’s football pedigree is unquestionable, pointing to global stars such as Samuel Eto'o, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and Riyad Mahrez as evidence of the continent’s immense talent and global influence.

He called for stronger leadership within CAF, urging authorities to prioritise transparency, stability, and trust in order to safeguard the future of the sport in Africa.

“If justice must be pursued, then it should be done even if it means going before the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” he added.

Drogba concluded by urging African football stakeholders to reflect on the long-term direction of the game, warning against allowing administrative decisions and internal politics to overshadow the efforts of players and the passion of fans.

“Africa deserves respect. African football deserves strong foundations,” he said. “We are giants and giants must stand tall together.”
