Former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki has urged the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Kabiru Turaki to accept the recent Court of Appeal ruling that favoured the Nyesom Wike camp in the party’s ongoing leadership dispute.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja recently upheld a lower court decision nullifying the controversial November 2025 national convention that produced the Turaki-aligned leadership. The appellate court cited procedural lapses, including the failure to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the lack of valid state congresses, and dismissed the Turaki faction’s appeal. A ₦2 million cost order was also imposed on Turaki’s camp.
Saraki said the Turaki faction should accept the verdict and move toward reconciliation, noting that ongoing legal battles threaten party stability and could hinder preparations for the 2027 elections. He emphasised that the PDP cannot afford delays if it hopes to complete candidate nominations and other critical electoral processes.
He added that continued litigation could create uncertainty over candidate eligibility, undermine party unity, and damage the PDP’s prospects in future elections. Saraki called on all party leaders to focus on stability, reconciliation, and election preparedness, rather than prolonging court battles.
Despite the ruling, the Turaki camp has indicated plans to appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that the appellate court decision could cause hardship and seeking a final legal determination on the leadership question.
Saraki’s remarks reflect a broader push for internal party cohesion, as Nigeria’s major political parties gear up for the next general elections amid heightened tensions and leadership disputes.
